The Litter Bug Ant

Here's a cool idea by Richard Destito of the Gear Factory, Syracuse, NY.

The Litter Bug Ant

In spirit of Earth Day the ant is made from 100% found or reused material and was covered by the public with litter that they collected from Earth Day clean-ups happening all around the City of Syracuse.

From construction, to the materials used, and the process of completing the sculpture with other people, the Litter Bug Ant in this way is expressing that nothing in life is how it has to be, it’s all only what we choose to make of it, and by working together, with everyone contributing what they can, a greater good is achieved.

Physical Description:

The Ant Garbage Monster is about 11 feet tall and takes up about a 6' X 8' area.
It's structure is made of re-used welded steel rod
He can be broken down easily for moving
With the exception of the legs and base, he has all fully movable joints like a giant action figure!!

Originally, the plan was to have 2 second prize winners, but I decided to have 4 second prize winners instead, each winning $50.

Peter Lewis submitted 4 different entries, all with a lot of detail. I like his ideas of how the costumes could work on stage.

I like the newspaper and junk mail on the legs, the garbage bag for the body, the colander for a head, but the best part is the styrofoam cooler to go with the line - "styrofoam underwear!"

The Garbage Monster Design Contest Results

Hi!

Today is September 1st, and it's time to announce the results of the Garbage Monster Contest!
Here is the original contest rules:
“Design a Garbage Monster Contest!”
$ 250 first prize
2 $75 second prizes

Deadline for submissions is August 23rd, 2008.

How it works:
I’m looking for a drawing or original photo of a "garbage monster," whatever you think that means. The winning design will be used as a blueprint for a builder to create the actual costume/puppet to be used in Tom Knight’s music video “The Garbage Monster” to be filmed this Fall.

The story: out of a pile of trash, a full-grown monster rises. It chases a 9 year-old kid around until he realizes that the monster is recyclable. He confronts the monster, and then removes each part, putting it in a recycling bin until there is nothing left of the monster, except the items in the recycling bin.

The actual size of the finished character in the film will be approximately 6 feet tall, or enough to intimidate a 2nd grade child when it “stands up.” We need a builder for the final character, but for now, we just want a drawing of photo to inspire the maker of the costume.

The winning design will be credited in the final film.

Rules:
1. The character must appear to be made entirely of of recyclable materials - cardboard, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, tin cans, paper etc.
2. You don’t have to be an artist to win! Winning entry will be judged on how imaginative it is, how hard it will be to build, and how cool it will look on film. Kids and young people are encouraged to enter.
3. Each artist can make up to three separate submissions, with up to 3 separate views (front, and side. rear view is optional.)
4. Individual images are not to exceed 1024KB in size or 2048 pixels width or height.
5. Submissions can be drawings, paintings or photos, but must be submitted digitally only by emailing to tomknightpuppets@gmail.com
6. All submissions will remain the property of Tom Knight Productions.
Decisions of all judges are final. By entering the contest you agree to abide by all contest rules.
7. The rules are subject to change without notice.
8. Deadline for submissions is August 23rd, 2008.
